The radiations coming from the sun consist of ultraviolet rays, visible light and infra-red rays.Most of the sun's ultraviolet rays are trapped by the ozone layer present in the stratosphere.
However,the ozone layer is unable to trap the visible light and infra-red rays and allows them to pass through the carbon dioxide layer present in the atmosphere.these rays heat up the atmosphere and thus produce a heating effect is the environment.
If the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is high the heating effect is greater because CO2 in large concentration forms an envelop around the earth and prevents heat to re-radiate out from the earth.
Consequently the temperature of the earths atmosphere rises.
This effect is known as Green house effect results the global warming.
In short it can be summarised in the following manner -
"The green house effect is the heating effect produced by certain gases present in the earth's atmosphere & which are capable to allow the infra-red radiation.But they are unable to re-radiate the heat out from the earth's atmosphere;thus cause the global warming.
The gases responsible for the global warming are known as green house gases.Among the various green houses gasses the carbon-dioxide ,methane,nitrous oxide,chlorofluoro-carbons,ozone and water vepor."
According to rough estimate the concentration of CO2 as increased nearly 25% since the man switched over to industrialisation and it is expected to increase further by 30% in the next 50 years.
The rate of increasing of concentration of CO2 is of about 0.75 ppm.By this the rate of increasing the temperature of the atmosphere is about 0.050C/year.
{ Above 35 kilometers the temperature actually increases with height at the average rate of 5 °C per kilometer. }
The atmosphere will go increasing day by day & a day may come when the glaciers,polar ice caps and snow on mountains would melt and the water level in hte rivers and seas would rise to an high level.
Increase in the global temperature increase the incidence diseases like malaria,dengue,yellow fever& many much more.
